According to the Mercury News Article today, “Donald Trump was elected to the drain the swamp, not the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.”
The problem? He’s nominating one of the worst of the bad guys in the California Water Wars, a former lobbyist for water-sucking Westlands Water District. Forgot who Westlands is? They are the water district for farmers along I-5 and the leader in the push to build the Delta Tunnels.
He’s David Bernhardt, Trump’s pick for deputy Interior Department secretary. He’s the last person the state should want representing it on crucial California water issues.
Bernhardt helped Westlands develop lawsuits that specifically tried to do away with California’s environmental water protections.
Call your Senators, Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris, and tell them to REJECT Bernardt’s confirmation in June when it comes up for a vote!

Actually Governor Brown wants to bore holes into the earth and drain water from the Delta–our brilliant DEMOCRATIC Governor…Green groups are filing a lawsuit to stop THE GOVERNOR. The Delta destruction plan has been in the works for a long time and has nothing to do with any DC bureaucrat but our very own Democrats here in California. Stop trying to spin this to blame the Republican Washington idiots–we have our own Dem idiots right here running California.
You’re almost right. The plan has been in the works for years and years – and it was our Republican Governor Arnold that kick-started it back up. Of course, it’s Brown’s dream (his legacy project) so he’s even more behind it and pushing even harder. But it’s a project being spearheaded by Central Valley billionaire farmers and L.A. Developers with the support of the water exporters and Metropolitan Water District.
This article though points out that Trump has put the foxes in key positions on his team. Westland’s attorney David Bernhardt is Trump’s pick for deputy Interior Department secretary – now in charge of the EPA and other services who we’d look to to stop this disaster.
To me, it’s less political and more corporate wheeling and dealing. That has been the case in California’s water history. It started with the secret Monterrey Agreement where the state gave a couple of corporate farmers (including the infamous Stewart Resnick, owner of Pom Pomegranates, Wonderful Almonds and Pistachios, and his wife’s Fiji Water Company – the Beverly Hills Billionaire Couple we in the water wars have grown to look at last the main evil enemy). It continued on with the BDCP / California WaterFix / Delta Tunnel Boondoggle. And now the Central Valley Corporate Farmers have even finagled their way into Trump’s inner circle.
