This is so frustrating! Comments Michael Brodsky, legal council for Save the California Delta Alliance, and other Alliance members have been making to the California Department of Water Resources (DWR), Delta Steering Committee, State Water Resource Council (SWRC) for over ten years listed one of the ways the state could really save water is to fix/replace the aging water pipes under L.A. The Biden Administration’s Infrastructure Bill provided $15 billion is explicitly targeted at removing and replacing toxic lead service lines that connect homes and facilities to water mains and additional funds to fix aging pipelines. Huge water savings.
But to be fair, there’s no money not only because Trump cancelled much of Biden’s Infrastructure Act, but maybe moreso because of all of the red tape and legal hoops states needed to go through in order to get and use the available money.
Whatever the reason, years and years later, LA’s aging water pipelines are still leaking and wasting extensive amounts of precious, fresh water. The State should start there to conserve and save water. Not begin to build a damaging, ineffective tunnel to divert even more fresh water from the Delta.
